South Side History: Happy Birthday Dr. Daniel Hale Williams!
Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was born on January 18, 1856 in Pennsylvania. He became the first surgeon to perform a successful open-heart surgery on a human.
He also founded Provident Hospital, the first Black-owned and operated hospital located on Chicago’s South Side. Dr. Williams’ home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.
