Hey there, Chicago Southsiders,
One thing I love about Chicago’s South Side is its rich history—and the people dedicated to preserving it. Walk through our neighborhoods, and you’ll find every block has a story.
Take Woodlawn, for example. A few years ago, five Black developers turned 11 vacant lots into 30 new homes. Some of our readers even grew up on that exact block and shared their memories. Read more here.
Go back a few decades, and you'll uncover another piece of Woodlawn’s history—one that changed the nation. Emmett Till’s story remains one of the most pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement. At a 2023 performance of Trial in the Delta at the DuSable Museum, one attendee said, "There should be no child on the South Side of Chicago who doesn’t know Emmett Till’s story."
Blacks in Green is now working to turn Till’s childhood home into a museum to honor his legacy. The Chicago City Council designated Emmett Till's former home a landmark on January 27, 2021.
Go behind the scenes of Emmett Till‘s trial here.
