Summertime Chi in June: Ida B. Wells Festival, Taste of Chicago, and More
Check out what's going on around Chicago this weekend.
Hey Chicago Southsiders!
It’s your favorite neighbor checking in! You may have missed us last week, but we’ve been out and about soaking up the energy of the city and getting a sneak peek at what’s coming next.
On Father’s Day, I made my way to Steppenwolf Theatre to see You Will Get Sick, a quirky, heartfelt production about what happens when illness creeps into your life—whether you’re ready or not. Expect a few surprises, a whole lot of truth, and yes… you will laugh. It’s running now through July 20th.
I also had the honor of attending the Illinois CPA Society Leadership and Awards Dinner, where history was sitting in the room—literally. Lester McKeever, one of the first 100 Black CPAs in the nation and longtime business partner of the legendary Mary T. Washington Wylie, just celebrated his 91st birthday this month!
Did you know Mary T. Washington Wylie started her accounting firm in the basement of her home and became the first Black CPA in the nation? That kind of legacy was born right here on the South Side. Read more about her powerful story here.
Speaking of legacy, I’ve set a personal summer goal: read one book before the summer ends. I picked one about a man who transformed the South Side through real estate—and I can’t wait to share what I learn! Reading was one of my favorite childhood pastimes, and this year, I’m making time to reconnect with stories that matter. If you’ve got little ones, don’t forget that Share Our Spare is giving away free books to children from birth to age five. Read here to find out how to enroll.
Now let’s dive into what’s happening around town! From parades to festivals, we’ve rounded up some of the events taking place around the city this weekend.
